When I was a student I learned a song about thanksgiving"OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS".I would sing this ditty in chant like fashion until we got to Mammaw. She lived anout 90 miles south east of the louisville area-Marion County-Kentucky.Things were real their-a new language-Souther dialect. The people had a diffent social rank.Daisy Irean Porter was near the bottom.Daisy was the oldest of 7 childrens. She was to have two children Flora, and Robert.I think both were from some torried love affair, but I shall never know.Flora ,mother would want to go to Mammaw's for the thanksgiving-we would always have a fight.Harold would say "I need to have the oil changed in the car.I will get up early have the oil changed and be back by 10:00am".He never made it.At 11:30 he would return she Mother was mad him would yell "were not going now".He would scream back "But she has cooked allof that food".The entire family was on edge.As kids we wanted to go .We would launch in to the car and he would drive as the devil wa behind us.We would cover the 2 hour trip in an hour and a half.we would gettheir we would cheer and run to the barn.Bob ,Mammaws youngest son, would simle and and watch his farm as the city kids wild run and squell with delight .We would soon be called to a dinner that only people from a farm community could appericate.long tables of casserols ,meat, pies, cakes, pickels, jellys and jams.Yes, we did have Thanksgiving....
